twirling along

on Friday morning, while the mr candy shopped the kids' Halloween stashes, jill and I got sewing. she got all her binding sewn on the front and I helped her attach the ends. I made 2 mistakes, but we got it done and she forgave me. first, I cut one of the tails 2.5" too long. then when I went to fix it, I cut too much off and we had to reattach it. utterly embarrassing, but she's more of a beginner than I am, so she was very patient with me.

my little sewing companion jumped right in and did her best to help. she sorted all my leftovers from the "twirly" top for me. jill commented that it's obvious she watches me work by the way she was so confidently laying that stuff out and moving it around.

while jill worked on binding, I got my backing pieced together. I simply laid out the quilt top on the ground and began placing pieces over the top of it until it was all covered up. I used the large panels that were ripped out of the front for being too short, some leftover border blocks, a few large scraps, and then made 3 more twirly blocks to fill in spaces. it took me all day and into the next, but it was pretty fun to work that way instead of with a pattern or any design in mind at all.

Saturday: I completed the backing (no seam ripping at all - a miracle!) and sandwhiched everything.
see those pins? I got it basted! quilting commences whenever I get off the computer today.

a bit of the back folded over so you can see the blocks I made and how I pieced some of the bits together. when it's all done, i'll show the whole thing.
